Prior to becoming a healthcare administrator, Julie Van Puffelen worked as a staff nurse at Meriter Hospital in Wisconsin. In 2003, Julie Van Puffelen began serving as manager for the project management division of Epic, one of the leading software developers in the healthcare industry.
New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) uses Epic software to implement an integrated electronic medical record (EMR) that analyzes the recovery and treatment processes of patients.
The clinical support tool enables clinicians to verify whether or not patients have undergone physical therapy on the same day of their surgery. With the help of the software, HSS has witnessed an increased number of patients receiving therapy on the same day they had surgery, rising from 86 to 96 percent. As a result, the average overall length of patient stays has reportedly been shortened.
Following the success of the program’s implementation, the net promoter score of HSS increased to 94 percent, with the industry average set at 67 percent.
